Why should you care about Program Service Data (PSD)?
(Yes, you should read all the way to the end of this page.)
1. It's cool. Talk about serving your listeners: they'll be able to see at a glance what's playing on your station. See the text box on our handy little 'virtual HD Radio' graphic, there? Your listeners want this. And having your station ID in front of their eyes at all times is a Good Thing, too.
2. It's hot. PSD is evolving in front of our very eyes. What is straightforward song/title/artist information today may be fundraising messages, forward promos, weather updates, or your website address tomorrow - if we decide that's what we want public radio's PSD to be.
3. It's difficult. In theory, broadcasting PSD should be a straightforward process. Descriptive program information already exists, right? Except that getting all of the hardware in the food chain to cooperate is - well, a pain at best. Some of it's still being invented. And then there's the little matter of consistency from show to show, national to local - And don't even talk to us about PSD when you're live-to-air without your automation system calling every shot. Oy! And what's this going to cost, by the way?
4. It's time. We get to control the development of PSD in public radio if we get out ahead of it now. PBCore gives public radio a huge leg up, and this PSD Consortium is here to help. For 18 months our CPB-funded project has been gathering information about stations' resources and testing and retesting PSD implementation on your behalf. Now we're giving you back the tools and best practices you need to get PSD up and running for all your shows - quickly, efficiently, and professionally. Thanks, CPB.
Questions? Rants or raves? (PSD-related, of course.) We want to hear from you.
