WEST COAST LIVE:  From the new Freight & Salvage in Berkeley, it's a big week for Sedge Thompson & crew, with guests including John Irving (pictured), Jonathan Safran Foer (Everything is Illuminated, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close), and Ashford & Simpson ("Solid").  Saturday at 10am.

GRRRRRR . . . :  The Brooklyn four-piece Grizzly Bear has made fans from Paul Simon to Jay-Z. Tune in as they bring their close pop harmonies to a live performance on this week's Sound OpinionsSunday at 2pm.

EXPLORING FELIX:  KALW and San Francisco Performances present a new season of Explorations in Music focused on Felix Mendelssohn.  Hosted by Alan Farley, the series features biographical and musical insights from scholar Robert Greenberg and performances of Mendelssohn's string quartets by the Alexander String Quartet.  Monday at 9pm.

"THE MOTH" RETURNS:  The New York Times calls The Moth "the dominant name in the live storytelling scene" and Garrison Keillor says it's "the next big huge hit in public radio."  Hear the power of true stories told live on stage, without scripts.  Wednesday at 1pm.

THE NERVE:  Taking a look at the How and Why of music, the CBC producers who brought you the Peabody-Award winning series The Wire: the Impact of Electricity on Music bring you a new six-part series, The Nerve: Music & the Human Experience.  In the fourth episode:  "Enchanted, Entranced (Music & Spirituality)" Friday at 10pm.

MORNING EDITION: Weekdays from 5-9am.

FRESH AIR:  Weekdays at 9am and 6pm.

KALW NEWS WINS BIG:  The Society of Professional Journalists' Northern California Chapter has announced its 2009 award-winners and KALW News received major recognition.  News Director Holly Kernan received the SPJNC's highest honor: "Journalist of the Year." Reporter Zoe Corneli was named "Outstanding Emerging Journalist" and reporter Steven Short won in the "Breaking News" category.  Read more about the SPJNC awards here.

VOICEBOX UPDATE: In May & June, KALW piloted VoiceBox, an eclectic program celebrating the art of singing.  We got lots of positive response from listeners, and host Chloe Veltman hopes to bring the program back to the air in 2010.  If you enjoyed VoiceBox or want to learn more, check out the VoiceBox website, which includes a listing of upcoming vocal music performances in the Bay Area.
